The emotional impact of cancer can be difficult to put into words. Perhaps you’ve just been diagnosed and feel overwhelmed, as though things are outside your control. Or maybe you’ve finished treatment and feel like you “should” be happy.

Whether you’re facing a diagnosis, going through treatment or adjusting to life afterwards, you may experience a mix of feelings, including shock, fear, anxiety, sadness or anger. There may also be a sense of loss – for the life you had before cancer or the future you had imagined.

How Can Cancer Counselling Help?

Cancer counselling offers space to talk about the emotional impact of cancer and explore ways to cope with what you’re facing.

Counselling can help you to:

  • Make sense of what you’re going through
  • Talk openly about thoughts and feelings you may find difficult to share with others
  • Explore feelings of grief and loss, including changes in your health, sense of self or expectations for the future
  • Find ways to cope with uncertainty and manage day-to-day challenges

You might find yourself holding back with friends or family because you’re worried about upsetting them. Counselling offers a separate space where you can talk honestly about how you’re feeling.

My Experience and Approach

I’m a BACP Accredited Counsellor and have been in practice since 2011. I’ve supported many clients at different stages of cancer, from diagnosis and treatment to life afterwards.

I previously supported people affected by cancer through an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which provided counselling on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support.

My approach is collaborative, with space to talk at your own pace and explore what may be helpful for you. You can read more about my experience and approach on my About Sharon page.

Online Cancer Counselling: Support That Fits Around You

I offer online counselling for adults across the UK. Online sessions allow you to access counselling from home, without the time and energy involved in travelling.

We can discuss session times around your medical appointments and, where possible, arrange sessions for days when you feel more able to attend.

If you need to cancel at short notice because of a cancer-related medical appointment or because cancer or its treatment has left you feeling unwell, you won’t be charged a cancellation fee.

You can find details about session length, fees and what to expect on my Fees & FAQ page.
