Why Do I Feel So Overwhelmed? When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Do you ever feel like everything is too much? Your mind is full of things to do and remember, decisions to make and things to deal with. Even something small can start to feel like one thing too many.

It can feel a bit like having hundreds of tabs open on an internet browser. You don’t know which one to deal with first, everything seems to be competing for your attention – and where is that music coming from?

Perhaps you find yourself thinking that if you could just try a little harder, be more organised or keep pushing through, you’d be able to manage everything like you used to. Or like everyone else seems to.

But feeling overwhelmed doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not coping well enough. Sometimes, there are simply too many things competing for your time, attention and energy at once.

And it doesn’t always take one big thing to tip us into overwhelm. Work, home, family, caring responsibilities, decisions, appointments and all the small things to remember can gradually pile up until your mind starts to feel too full.

Signs You May Be Overwhelmed

When your mind feels overloaded, you might notice:

Difficulty making even small decisions

Struggling to concentrate or becoming easily distracted

Mental fog, where your thoughts are all over the place and you just can’t seem to think straight

Feeling more irritable, emotional or easily frustrated than usual

Finding it difficult to prioritise because everything feels as though it needs your attention

Avoiding or putting things off because you don’t know where to start

These are just some of the ways overwhelm can show up. You may notice other changes in how you think, feel or manage everyday life too.

Stress and Overwhelm: What’s the Difference?

Stress, anxiety and overwhelm can feel very similar, and there can be a lot of overlap between them.

Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure or demands, while overwhelm is more that sense of “this is all too much.” When your mind already feels overloaded, stress or anxious thoughts can add even more to process.

There isn’t necessarily a clear order to how they happen. Stress and anxiety can contribute to feeling overwhelmed, while feeling overwhelmed can, in turn, leave you feeling more stressed or anxious. They can feed into one another, creating a cycle that can be difficult to step out of.

What Causes Overwhelm?

There isn’t always one clear cause of overwhelm. More often, it’s the result of different demands building up and competing for our time, attention and energy.

Work, home, family, relationships, caring responsibilities and the everyday tasks that keep life running can all add to the load. But it isn’t only about how much we have to do. Our minds are also constantly processing information and trying to keep track of what needs our attention.

Then there are all the decisions we are faced with each day – what to buy, what to eat, what to prioritise and how we spend our time. While having choices can be a good thing, too many options can become mentally tiring and sometimes make it harder to make a decision at all.

Overthinking and perfectionism can add another layer. We might feel that we should be able to keep on top of everything, spend time going over decisions, or worry about getting things wrong.

For people who are neurodivergent, sensory input, planning or switching between tasks, social demands and having a lot of information to process can also contribute to overwhelm.

Different stages of life can bring other things that add to the load. In midlife, for example, changing responsibilities can happen alongside menopause, when changes to sleep, mood or concentration may make everything else feel harder to manage.

Often, it’s not any one of these things on its own. It’s the way they can build up together until everything starts to feel like too much.

What Can Help When You Feel Overwhelmed?

When your mind already feels overloaded, knowing where to start can be difficult. Trying to think about everything that needs your attention can add to that sense of overwhelm.

It can help to begin by getting some of what you’re carrying out of your head. Writing down tasks, worries, things to remember or decisions you need to make can make it easier to see what’s taking up mental space.

Rather than trying to work out how you’re going to manage everything, it may help to focus on what needs your attention most right now.

A Few Questions to Reflect On:

What is taking up most of my mental space right now?

Does everything on my list really need to be done today?

Is there anything I’m trying to get just right when “good enough” might be okay?

Is there anything I could ask for help with, simplify or let go of?

What is one small thing I could focus on next?

You don’t need to answer all these questions or make lots of changes at once. The idea isn’t to give yourself another list of things you should be doing, but to help you notice what’s taking up space and whether anything could be made a little easier.

When Overwhelm Is Hard to Manage Alone

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed for a while and it’s becoming difficult to manage on your own, counselling can give you space to make sense of what’s adding to the load and explore what might help things feel more manageable.

I offer online counselling for adults across the UK.
Why Counselling Is More Than Just Talking

Talking to a Counsellor vs Talking to a Friend

If you’ve never had counselling before, you might wonder what happens in counselling, what you’ll actually do in a session, and whether it’s really any different from talking to a friend.

But here’s the thing. If counselling was simply talking, there wouldn’t be much difference between a counselling session and a conversation with a friend.

Friends can be a great source of support. They know us, care about us and can offer comfort when things feel difficult. But counselling provides something different — the focus is entirely on you. There’s dedicated time and space to talk openly about what’s going on for you, without having to worry about the other person’s feelings or needs.

Counsellors Are Trained Professionals

Counsellors undergo professional training in counselling theory, skills and practice. Their training includes supervised clinical practice, where they develop the knowledge, skills and experience needed to support clients safely and effectively.

This training means a counsellor isn’t simply someone who is good at listening. They are trained to understand how people think, feel and behave, and to use specific counselling skills to help you explore what you’re experiencing.

They learn how to listen carefully, ask questions that can help you explore your thoughts and feelings, recognise patterns and respond appropriately when difficult or complex issues arise. They also learn how to maintain professional boundaries and create a safe, confidential space for clients.

So while talking is an important part of counselling, it’s what happens within that conversation that makes it different from talking to a friend.

Counselling Is More Than Just Listening

Talking about difficult thoughts and feelings can sometimes leave you feeling no clearer about what you’re experiencing. Counselling can help you untangle what’s going on and begin to make sense of thoughts, feelings and experiences that may feel confusing or overwhelming.

A counsellor listens carefully to what you share and can help you explore patterns, connections or ways of thinking that you hadn’t noticed before. They might gently ask questions or bring something to your attention that helps you look at things from a different perspective.

It’s not about analysing everything you say or looking for something that’s wrong. It’s about helping you understand what’s happening for you, so that you can begin to work out what you need and what might help.

A Space to Talk Without Holding Back

Sometimes, it’s easier to be open with someone who isn’t part of your day-to-day life.

With friends and family, we can sometimes hold back because we don’t want to worry them, repeat ourselves, or change how they see us. We may also find ourselves saying “I’m fine” when we’re not, or playing down how difficult things really feel.

In counselling, you don’t have to protect the other person from what you’re feeling. You can talk about the things that are difficult, confusing or uncomfortable, without needing to reassure anyone, explain yourself or worry about how your words might affect them.

That freedom can make it easier to be honest about what’s really going on, sometimes for the first time.

A Counsellor Offers a Fresh Perspective

Friends often know your history, your relationships and the circumstances you’re dealing with. Because they care about you, they may naturally have their own ideas about what’s happening or what they think you should do.

A counsellor comes to your situation differently. They aren’t caught up in your relationships or involved in the decisions you’re trying to make. This can make it easier for them to step back and look at what’s happening from another perspective.

Sometimes, having someone help you slow things down and look at a situation differently can reveal patterns, assumptions or possibilities that are difficult to see when you’re in the middle of it.

Sometimes, the Right Question Changes Everything

Often, the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from being given the answers. They come from being asked questions that help you find your own.

When a friend is struggling, our natural instinct is often to offer advice or solutions. A counsellor takes a different approach, using thoughtful questions to help you step back and look more closely at what you’re thinking and feeling.

This might mean exploring where a belief has come from, questioning whether an assumption is really true, looking at a situation from another perspective, or considering what you actually want.

This kind of questioning and reflection can help you recognise patterns, challenge assumptions and see possibilities that may not have been obvious before. The goal isn’t for your counsellor to give you the answer. It’s to help you explore your own thinking and work out what feels right for you.

Talking Is Just the Start

Talking about what’s happening is often just the starting point. Through exploring your thoughts, feelings and experiences, counselling can help you understand what’s contributing to how you’re feeling, recognise what is within your control and consider what you might want to change.

Depending on what you’re struggling with, this might mean developing new ways to cope, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, setting boundaries, building confidence or making changes that feel right for you.

The aim isn’t simply to talk about your problems. It’s to understand them, explore what you might want to do differently and find a way forward.

If you’re wondering what this looks like in practice, you can read more about What Happens in Counselling (And How It Works).

Could Counselling Offer You Something Different?

If you’ve been wondering “Is counselling just talking?”, hopefully this has given you a better idea of what happens within that conversation, and what makes it different from talking to a friend.

A free 10–15 minute introductory call gives you the opportunity to find out more, ask any questions and see whether working together feels right for you.

You can simply start with what’s been happening for you.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique for Anxiety, Stress, and Overwhelm

When stress hits or your mind starts racing, it can be hard to calm the mental chatter. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many of my clients describe feeling overwhelmed, overstimulated, or caught in loops of anxious thoughts that feel impossible to switch off.

In therapy, one of the simplest grounding tools I often introduce is the 5‑4‑3‑2‑1 grounding technique. This sensory‑based exercise helps bring attention back to the present moment by engaging your senses.

The 5-4-3-2-1 tool works by shifting your attention to what you can see, hear, touch, smell and taste, helping you step away from spiralling thoughts and reconnect with what’s happening around you.

What is the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Tool?

The 5-4-3-2-1 tool uses your five senses to bring your attention away from spiralling thoughts and towards what’s happening around you.

It’s a simple way of interrupting the cycle of overthinking and reconnecting with the present when anxiety, stress or overwhelm starts to feel like too much.

What Does it Mean to Be Grounded?

Being grounded means bringing your attention back to the present rather than getting caught up in worries about the future or thoughts about the past.

Grounding isn’t about making difficult thoughts or feelings disappear. It’s about creating a little distance from them so you can become more aware of what’s happening around you.

What are the Benefits of the 5-4-3-2-1 Tool?

Stress and anxiety can sometimes leave you caught in racing thoughts, feeling physically tense or struggling to concentrate. When your mind and body feel overloaded, it can be difficult to step back from what’s happening and focus on the present.

The 5-4-3-2-1 tool gives you something practical to focus on by engaging your senses. It may help you:

Interrupt spiralling or racing thoughts

Reduce the intensity of stress and anxiety

Bring your attention back to the present

Feel more grounded and steady

Create a little distance from overwhelming thoughts and feelings

Manage moments of stress, anxiety and overwhelm

When Can You Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Tool?

The 5-4-3-2-1 tool can be useful when you notice stress, anxiety or overwhelm building, before they start to feel like too much.

You don’t have to wait until you’re feeling completely overwhelmed. Using the tool when you first notice signs of stress or anxiety may help you refocus before things escalate.

When Might the Tool Be Helpful?

Feeling stressed or overwhelmed

Experiencing anxiety or racing thoughts

Beginning to panic

Feeling disconnected from the present moment

Struggling to concentrate because your mind feels busy or overwhelmed

How Do You Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Tool?

In my work with clients, I often recommend practising the 5-4-3-2-1 technique when you are feeling relatively calm. Becoming familiar with the process can make it feel more natural and easier to use when you notice stress or anxiety building.

I also encourage clients to use the tool early, when they first notice signs of anxiety or overwhelm, rather than waiting until these feelings become intense. This can give you an opportunity to pause, refocus your attention and steady yourself before things feel more difficult to manage.

Before you begin, you might find it helpful to take a few slow, comfortable breaths and notice how you are feeling.

You can then move through the five steps below at your own pace, focusing on each of your senses in turn.

Here’s a quick overview of the tool before we go through each step in detail.

Step 1: Identify 5 Things You Can See

Begin by bringing your attention to your surroundings and naming five things you can see. For example:

A plant in the room

A picture on the wall

A chair or piece of furniture

Take your time and notice small details such as colour, shape or texture.

This helps bring your attention into the present through what you can see.

Step 2: Identify 4 Things You Can Feel

Next, notice four things you can feel through touch. For example:

Your feet on the floor

The chair beneath you

Your hands resting on your lap

The fabric of your clothing

This helps bring your attention to physical sensations and back to the present.

Step 3: Identify 3 Things You Can Hear

Now, gently shift your focus to three things you can hear. For example:

Birds singing

Traffic in the distance

A dog barking

The sound of your fingers tapping lightly

This gives you another way to focus your attention on what’s happening around you.

If it feels comfortable, you might close your eyes for a moment to help you focus on the sounds around you.

Step 4: Identify 2 Things You Can Smell

Take a slow breath in and notice two different smells around you. For example:

The aroma of food or coffee

A scented candle

Fresh air

A nearby flower

If you cannot immediately notice two distinct smells, simply notice if there is any scent present in your environment, however subtle. You could also shift your position to see if you notice anything different.

Step 5: Identify 1 Thing You Can Taste

Finally, bring your attention to one thing you can taste. For example:

The lingering taste of food

Chewing gum

A sip of water

Any taste currently in your mouth

This final step completes the exercise by bringing your attention to your sense of taste.

Can the 5-4-3-2-1 Tool Be Adapted?

This tool is flexible and can be adapted to suit different needs and abilities. If you find it doesn’t feel helpful or accessible, you can adjust it in a way that works for you.

Even a simplified version can be useful in the moment. For example:

If you have difficulty with sight, you can focus more on sound or touch

If hearing is limited, you can rely more on visual or physical sensations

If smell or taste is difficult to access, you can focus on the senses that are most available to you

If you feel very overwhelmed, you may find it helpful to complete just one or two of the steps

The goal is not to complete the exercise perfectly, but to use whatever feels most supportive in the moment.

Why Do Therapists Use Grounding Techniques in Therapy?

One reason I often introduce grounding tools in therapy is that they are simple, practical and can be used outside the therapy room. The 5-4-3-2-1 tool doesn’t require any special equipment, and once you’re familiar with it, you can use it at home, at work or while travelling.

When someone feels caught up in anxious or overwhelming thoughts, a grounding tool can provide something practical to focus on. By bringing attention to the senses and what’s happening in the present, it can create a pause from spiralling thoughts and help you feel more steady.

Grounding is one of many tools that can be explored in counselling, and what is helpful will vary from person to person.

How to Get the Most Out of Grounding Tools

The 5-4-3-2-1 tool can become easier to use when you’ve practised it during calmer moments. Becoming familiar with the steps means you don’t have to work out what to do when you’re already feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

You can also use it early, when you first notice stress or anxiety building, rather than waiting until things feel intense.

Do Grounding Techniques Work for Everyone?

No single grounding tool works for everyone, and the 5-4-3-2-1 won’t necessarily feel helpful in every situation. Some people find it useful, while others may prefer breathing exercises, movement, journalling, or a combination of different strategies.

It’s also worth remembering that grounding isn’t necessarily about making distress disappear immediately. The aim is to help you pause, reconnect with the present and create some space around difficult thoughts or feelings

If you find the 5-4-3-2-1 isn’t helpful, particularly when you’re experiencing very high levels of distress, it may be worth trying a different approach or seeking additional support.

If stress, overthinking or overwhelm often leave your mind feeling overloaded, I’ve created a free practical guide to help you use the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding tool.

Feeling Nervous Before Your First Counselling Session is Completely Normal

Starting something new can feel unsettling. And when that “something new” involves opening up about your thoughts and feelings, it can feel even more daunting.

As a counsellor, I’ve worked with many clients who felt nervous before their first counselling session. These worries are completely understandable, and you’re certainly not alone in feeling them. Many people experience a mix of uncertainty, hesitation and anxiety before their first appointment.

You might find yourself thinking:

“I won’t know where to start…”

“What will I say?”

“Is it okay to cry?”

“What if my problems aren’t serious enough?”

These are some of the most common worries before starting counselling.

The reassuring part is that you don’t need to arrive with the “right words”, a neat explanation, or a clear plan. We’ll explore things together at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Your Counsellor Knows What It’s Like to Be a Client

Something that may be reassuring is that many counsellors will have their own experience of being a client in therapy. This can help them understand what it feels like to sit in the client’s chair and take that first step into counselling.

Personal therapy is a recommended (and in many cases expected) part of counsellor training and ongoing professional development. I’ve experienced therapy from the client’s perspective, which gave me a deeper understanding appreciation of how vulnerable opening up can sometimes feel.

So the person sitting in front of you is likely to have their own experience of reflecting on difficult thoughts and feelings, coping with uncertainty, and talking about things that may feel hard to share. Most counsellors I’ve met genuinely believe in the value of therapy because they’ve experienced the benefits for themselves.

You’re stepping into a space with someone who understands the courage it takes to begin.

Not Sure What to Say In Counselling?

One of the most common worries people have before their first therapy session is not knowing what to say.

In my experience, it’s really common for people to start a session feeling unsure what to say, and then find that the conversation begins to flow more naturally once we start talking.

If you’re feeling stuck, a few gentle starting points can help.

You might find it helpful to jot a few thoughts down beforehand and bring them with you

You can ask your counsellor to use open questions to help guide the session

Or you can simply begin with what brought you there – even something as simple as “I’m not feeling like myself lately”

There’s no pressure to explain everything perfectly. Counsellors are skilled at helping you explore thoughts and feelings that might feel jumbled or hard to put into words.

It’s also okay if you’re not entirely sure why you’re struggling or what you want from counselling yet. Exploring those uncertainties can be part of the process too.

Is It Okay to Cry in Counselling (And is it normal?)

Yes, it’s completely okay to cry in counselling, and it’s also very normal. Many people worry about becoming emotional during a counselling session, but crying is a natural human response, and can sometimes bring a sense of release or relief. It’s not something you need to hide or feel embarrassed about.

As a counsellor, I’ve sat with many clients in these moments. You won’t be judged or seen as weak. Allowing emotion to come through can be a meaningful part of the process – a sign that something important is being felt rather than held inside.

What If My Problems Aren’t Serious Enough for Counselling

It’s very common to wonder whether what you’re going through is “serious enough” for counselling. Many people compare themselves to others and minimise what they are going through, but if something is affecting you, it matters, and it’s worth seeking support. Counselling isn’t just for people in crisis.

It’s for anyone who wants support, clarity, or simply a space where they don’t have to carry everything on their own.

Not Sure What to Expect in Counselling? Here’s a Simple Guide

If you’ve never had counselling before, it’s completely understandable to feel unsure about what to expect. Counselling typically involves talking with a trained therapist in a confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences at your own pace.

I’ve created a “What to Expect” series that explains the counselling process in a clear, supportive way – especially useful if you’re preparing for your first counselling session.

This series explores common questions and key stages of therapy, including what happens in counselling sessions, what to expect in your first counselling session, and common worries before starting therapy.

What Happens in Counselling (And How it Works)

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, it’s natural to have questions about what happens in counselling and how the process works.

In this article, I’ll walk through what typically happens in counselling sessions, how counselling works, and what to expect as therapy progresses.

As an integrative counsellor, this is typically how I work with clients. Every counsellor has their own style and approach, so your experience may vary slightly depending on who you work with.

This article is part of the What to Expect in Counselling series, which explores the counselling process in more detail.

What Happens in Counselling Sessions?

In counselling, you’ll talk with your counsellor about what’s on your mind. They listen, ask questions, and help you explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at your own pace.

Sessions often involve:

Talking through what feels most present or important to you

Exploring thoughts, feelings, and concerns

Noticing patterns that may be linked to stress, anxiety, or overwhelm

Finding new ways of coping with difficult thoughts or feelings

Gaining different perspectives on your situation

Coping with life changes such as menopause, or other seasons of change

Counselling isn’t about being told what to do, it’s about exploring things together so you can understand yourself more clearly and recognise what you need.

What is The Counselling Relationship Like?

One of the most important parts of counselling is the relationship between you and your counsellor.

This relationship is different from everyday conversations. It’s a professional, confidential space where you’re not judged, diagnosed, or expected to “get things right”.

In my work, I see the relationship as collaborative. You bring your experiences, and I work alongside you to help you make sense of them.

It’s also your space:

You decide what to talk about

You set the pace

You don’t have to share anything before you are ready

Over time, this can help you feel more comfortable opening up.

Why Counsellors Use Silence

Silence is a normal part of counselling, even though it can feel unfamilar at first.

In every day conversation, we often rush to fill these pauses. In counselling, I may stay quiet intentionally to give you time to think, reflect, and gather your thoughts.

These pauses can help you to:

Notice thoughts you might otherwise miss

Connect more deeply with feelings

Slow things down so nothing feels rushed

While silence can feel uncomfortable at first, many people find it becomes a helpful part of the process over time.

Choice, Control and Collaboration in Therapy

Counselling is a collaborative process, which means you remain in control of what you chose to bring and explore.

Choice

You decide what feels important to talk about. You can bring anything that’s on your mind, even if you’re not sure where to start.

Control

You set the pace. If something feels like too much, we can slow down or shift focus.

Collaboration

We work together to explore what’s going on and what might help.

What Does Counselling Feel Like Over Time?

As counselling progresses, many people begin to experience a sense of relief from having space to talk things though. It can feel like finally “offloading” – almost like emptying a cupboard that’s been full for a long time.

From there, people often start to notice patterns in how they think, feel, and respond to situations.

You might start to:

Feel a sense of relief from not holding everything in on your own

Take a step back before reacting in the moment

Understand yourself more clearly

Recognise recurring emotional or behavioural patterns

Develop new ways of coping with stress or overwhelm

Everyone’s experience is different, and counselling doesn’t follow a fixed timeline, it moves at your pace.

Common Questions About Counselling

It’s completely normal to have questions before starting counselling.

You might be wondering:

How many sessions will I need?

Is counselling is confidential?

What happens if you don’t know what to say?

How often sessions take place?

You can find answers to some of the most common questions on my FAQ page, where I explain more about how counselling works and what you can expect.

Thinking About Starting Counselling?

If you’re considering counselling, it’s natural to feel unsure about what the process involves and whether it’s the right step for you.

Hopefully this article has given you a clearer understanding of what happens in counselling and helped ease some of the uncertainty people often feel before starting.

Many people feel nervous before their first appointment.
Winter Blues: When Winter Feels Heavy

Do you find yourself waking up on dark mornings already tired, as if the day feels heavy before it’s even begun? The shorter days, fading light and colder weather can leave you feeling more tired, less motivated, or simply not quite yourself.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people notice a change in their mood, energy and motivation as the days get shorter.

For some people, these changes are relatively mild and are often described as the “winter blues”. For others, the change can be more significant and may be linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a clinical condition that can have a substantial impact on day-to-day life. If you’re wondering whether you may have SAD, there’s a short note below with further information.

There’s plenty of familiar advice for getting through the darker months: make the most of daylight, keep moving, eat well and stay connected. These things can all support our wellbeing. But supporting ourselves through winter can also mean paying attention to what we need as our energy and motivation change.

What if supporting ourselves through winter isn’t only about trying to keep going as we do at other times of the year? What if it also means accepting that our energy may change, making room for more rest and comfort, and finding a pace that feels more manageable?

A note about SAD

If you’re experiencing persistent or significant changes in your mood, sleep, energy or appetite, it’s worth speaking to your GP or another healthcare professional. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a recognised form of depression, and support and treatment are available.

For more information about SAD, including symptoms and treatment options, visit the NHS website.

Managing Your Energy During Winter

Winter can naturally change our energy and motivation. The cold, darker days may leave you feeling more tired, less motivated or simply in need of a slower pace. Instead of fighting that shift, try noticing it without judgement.

This doesn’t mean giving up on your goals or letting things slide. It means recognising that your energy can ebb and flow at different times of the year. Giving yourself permission to slow down can help reduce stress, ease feelings of overwhelm and protect against burnout.

Rather than expecting yourself to maintain the same pace as you would during the brighter months, consider what feels realistic for you right now. Here are a few simple ways to support yourself:

Create small rituals of warmth and comfort – soft lighting, cosy blankets, a warming drink, or a playlist that helps you unwind can make darker evenings feel a little more inviting.

Choose low-effort evening pleasures – a favourite film, a comforting book, or simply sitting quietly with your hands wrapped around a mug of hot chocolate can give you something to look forward to.

Notice the subtle beauty of winter – the crisp air, the hush of early evenings, muted colours, or the soft light at dusk can all offer moments of calm if we take time to notice them.

If you catch yourself thinking “I should be doing more”, pause and ask:

What would it look like to accept my energy as it is right now?

Perhaps that means allowing yourself to rest without guilt, or taking smaller steps that fit the energy you have today.

Slowing down isn’t failing. Sometimes, adjusting our expectations and allowing ourselves a little more rest is exactly what we need to move through winter in a way that feels more manageable.

Making Small Changes to Support Your Wellbeing

Small adjustments to your routine can make winter feel more manageable. Think about where you could reduce pressure, protect your energy or make everyday life a little easier during the darker months.

Shift expectations – allow yourself shorter work blocks or fewer commitments when you need them, recognising that your energy may be different in winter.

Protect your rest time – treat pauses, naps or quiet moments as valid parts of your routine, rather than time you have wasted.

Reframe productivity – remind yourself that small, steady steps still count. You don’t have to work at full speed all the time. A slower, more sustainable pace can help you protect your energy and avoid burnout.

Make the most of daylight when you can – getting outside during daylight hours, even for a short walk or a few minutes away from your desk, can be a simple way of supporting your wellbeing during the darker months.

These adjustments aren’t about lowering your expectations of yourself. They’re about recognising what you need and giving yourself permission to respond to that.

Staying Connected During Winter

As the days get colder and darker, it can be tempting to retreat and spend more time alone. Sometimes that extra quiet can feel comforting, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying your own company. But staying connected with others can also support your mood and wellbeing.

Connection doesn’t need to be big or busy. Small, manageable moments of contact can be enough to help you feel less alone.

Keep it simple – meet a friend for coffee, go for a short winter walk together, or arrange a quick catch-up.

Find connection in ways that feel comfortable – a book club, wellbeing group or community class can offer connection without feeling too overwhelming.

Reach out in small ways – send a message to someone you trust, make a quick phone call, or simply let someone know you’re thinking of them.

And if reaching out feels difficult, that’s understandable. Winter can draw us inward, especially when energy and motivation are already low. Connection isn’t about doing more. It’s about finding what feels manageable and supportive for you.

Even one small step towards connection can help you feel a little less alone during the darker months.

When Winter Feels Heavy: How Counselling Can Help

Sometimes, even with small changes to our routine, rest and connection, winter can still feel difficult. For some people, this may be part of the winter blues. For others, it may be linked with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If you’re experiencing persistent low mood, significant changes in your sleep or appetite, or finding that everyday life feels harder than usual, it may be helpful to speak to your GP or another healthcare professional. Counselling can sit alongside medical support or other treatments, or it can give you an opportunity to explore what you’re finding difficult.

Counselling can give you time to step back from the pressures of everyday life, make sense of what you’re experiencing and explore ways of supporting yourself that fit your life.

In counselling, you can:

Talk openly about how you’re feeling – giving you time to put into words what you’re experiencing.

Explore coping strategies that fit you – taking into account your energy, personality, and circumstances.

Develop kinder ways of responding to yourself – particularly when self-criticism or feeling that you “should” be doing more becomes louder during the darker months.

Whether you’re experiencing winter blues or think you may be affected by SAD, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Counselling can be a gentle form of support, and if this resonates with you, get in touch.

Is there anything else you’d add to these suggestions? If you’ve found something that helps you through the darker months, feel free to share it in the comments.

Exercise For Your Body – Counselling For Your Mind

Just as we strengthen our bodies through exercise, seeking counselling is an act of courage that strengthens our mind and emotional wellbeing. The courage to seek counselling shows that looking after your emotional health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Like our bodies, our minds require regular attention and care, not only when something is wrong, but to stay healthy, resilient and balanced.

Seeking Counselling Before a Crisis Matters

Seeking counselling doesn’t need to be a last resort; it’s a wise, proactive approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing. By working with a counsellor, you build emotional strength, may prevent stress from becoming burnout, and stay ready for whatever life throws your way. Think of it as emotional fitness training, building a stronger, calmer and more balanced you.

The Strength in Being Vulnerable

Being vulnerable is often considered a sign of weakness, but it embracing vulnerability can actually promote emotional and mental health. It allows us to be our true selves, without wearing a mask. It takes courage to admit that we are struggling, to face difficult emotions and challenge negative patterns of thinking.

When we allow ourselves to be open and honest, vulnerability becomes a tool for growth. It helps us recognise unhelpful patterns, discover healthier coping strategies and build deeper, more authentic connections with others. Every time we allow ourselves to be vulnerable in counselling, we’re showing courage and building resilience.

The courage to seek counselling shows that true strength isn’t about hiding our struggles, but about facing them. Choosing therapy is choosing growth, healing and emotional freedom.

It Takes Strength to be Honest with Yourself

Being honest with ourselves and looking inward isn’t always easy. Counselling invites us to explore what’s going on beneath the surface. This kind of honesty is a quiet strength that can open the door to healing, clarity, and lasting change.

Sharing Your Story Takes Courage

Opening up about your experiences, especially the parts you’ve kept hidden, takes real courage. In counselling, sharing your story isn’t a sign of weakness but a brave step towards healing and growth. Being truly heard in a safe, supportive space helps you work through challenges that may have felt overwhelming on your own, while bringing clarity and giving you the strength to move forward.

Seeking Counselling is a Proactive Step

Counselling is a proactive step towards supporting your emotional wellbeing and improving your overall quality of life. It’s an act of courage that empowers you to take charge of your mental health and address challenges before they escalate into a crisis.

Through counselling, you can discover healthier ways of coping with stress, break free from patterns that may be holding you back, and uncover triggers that could cause difficulties. Taking these proactive steps for your mental health demonstrates courage but also strengthens your resilience, helping you face challenges with greater confidence.

Just as we care for our physical health, counselling helps keep our minds strong and balanced. Reaching out for support is never a sign of weakness; in fact, taking this step before a crisis is both proactive and courageous. Choosing therapy means embracing growth, nurturing your emotional wellbeing, and strengthening your resilience to face life’s challenges with greater confidence.

If you’re ready to take that next step, reach out today.

Life After Cancer: The Unexpected Emotional Challenges

Finished cancer treatment and feel like you “should” be happy? Perhaps you expected to feel relieved, or thought life would begin to return to how it was before. Instead, you may feel unsettled, anxious or unsure what comes next.

During treatment, much of your attention may have been taken up with appointments, decisions and getting through each day. Afterwards, there may be more space to take in what has happened – and feelings you hadn’t expected can begin to surface.

Life after cancer treatment doesn’t always feel the way you, or those around you, imagined it would. That can be difficult to explain, particularly when others see the end of treatment as a reason to celebrate.

Why Can Life After Cancer Treatment Feel So Difficult?

The end of treatment is a significant change, but it doesn’t necessarily mark the end of cancer’s impact on your life.

You may still be managing physical changes, tiredness or longer-term treatment. There might be work or financial pressures to deal with, alongside questions about your health and future.

You may also miss the regular contact with your treatment team. Although fewer appointments can be welcome, the change can leave you feeling less supported or less certain about what happens next.

You can feel relieved that treatment has finished and still find life afterwards difficult.

When Counselling Might Be Helpful

Sometimes it’s difficult to work out what you need while also trying to reassure others or meet everyday demands.

Counselling can offer time to understand what is making life difficult now. That might mean looking at the pressure to get back to how things were, finding ways to respond to recurring worries, or working out how to communicate your needs.

You don’t need a clear explanation of how you feel before you begin.

You can read more about my support on my Cancer Counselling page, or get in touch to arrange a free introductory call.

Do you feel overwhelmed by life’s constant demands and clutter, both physical and emotional? If you’re searching for ways to simplify your life and reduce stress and anxiety, The Minimalists podcast might be exactly what you need.

This isn’t just about throwing things away. It’s about the meaning we attach to stuff, letting go of physical and emotional excess, and making more intentional decisions that help you simplify your life.

From Burnout to Balance: Why The Minimalists Chose to Simplify Life

The podcast began as a blog, hosted by Joshua Fields Millburn, Ryan Nicodemus, and now T.K. Coleman. Their Netflix documentary Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things has reached over 80 million viewers, inspiring people to rethink their relationship with material possessions, productivity and peace of mind.

Their decision to break free from the pressure of the “American Dream” in search of a more intentional life may resonate with anyone who feels overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted.

Outwardly, Josh and Ryan had it all: high-paying corporate careers and luxury lifestyles to match. However, behind closed doors, they were stressed and miserable with a deep sense of disconnection – a hidden struggle many carry.

What’s Minimalism Really About?

The minimalist lifestyle isn’t about living with next to nothing. It’s about eliminating what overwhelms so you can simplify your life, making space for what truly adds value.

As the hosts explain:

“Minimalism is a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favour of focusing on what’s important — so you can find happiness, fulfilment and freedom”

As a result, this philosophy supports emotional regulation, anxiety relief, and a more sustainable pace of life.
A Podcast That Helps You Simplify Your Life

In each episode, The Minimalists podcast explores themes like digital distractions, mental clutter, and emotional wellbeing. The format is simple yet effective: engaging conversations, Q&A sessions, and practical suggestions to help you simplify your life.

What Makes The Minimalists Podcast Stand Out?

No intrusive ads – Their motto? “Advertisements suck”.

Spring is a season of renewal, growth and fresh starts. The time when we spring clean our homes. Decluttering, clearing out the cobwebs, and making space for brighter days ahead.

But what about our minds?

Just like our homes benefit from a physical spring clean, our mental wellbeing benefits from a reset — and that’s precisely what counselling can provide.

In my recent article published in the Counselling Directory, which is a leading UK platform for professional mental health support, I explore how counselling acts like a spring clean for the mind. It helps you release mental clutter, reduce stress, and create space for clarity and growth.

I use the analogy of emptying a messy cupboard. When everything is unpacked it becomes easier to see everything more clearly and let go of what you no longer need — before repacking everything again with more order.

Key Takeaways from the Article

Here’s a quick look at what I explore in the article:

Decluttering Emotional Baggage: How we all accumulate emotional “clutter” over time, from unresolved feelings to perfectionism-driven stress. Counselling provides a space to unpack these emotions, process them, and reorganise your mental space.

Release Stress: Like dust in a neglected corner, stress builds up if we don’t manage it. Using the Stress Bucket analogy, I discuss how healthy coping strategies — such as mindfulness and journaling, act as an outlet to release stress before it overflows.

Let Go of Negative Thought Patterns: Ever found yourself stuck in a loop of negative thoughts? Counselling helps you challenge thought patterns and replace them with more realistic, balanced alternatives.

Gain a Fresh Perspective: Counselling can help you take a step back, explore different perspectives and see things more clearly.

Develop Coping Strategies: Counselling isn’t just about talking. It’s about developing a personal toolkit of strategies that genuinely work for you, supporting you through life’s ups and downs.

Build Resilience and Emotional Strength – Counselling isn’t just for times of crisis. It’s an investment in your long-term emotional resilience, helping you to bounce back from life’s challenges with greater strength, awareness and confidence.
